The Metamorphosis

In The Metamorphosis, Gregor turns into a beetle. His family and manager are very scared and disgusted by him. Do you think they know the giant beetle is Gregor, and if so, do they think it is his fault that he turned into a beetle? I'm not sure they know it's him, but I was kind of confused, so maybe that actually did. Also, it is mentioned multiple times that Gregor's parents owe his boss some sort of debt. What sort of debt do you think this is, and do you think it has anything to do with Gregor being turned into a beetle?

  1. Well I would like to start off saying that I am enjoying this book very much. Gregor is indeed a very interesting character that goes through many changes. These changes aren’t only physical like him actually turning into a beetle and his voice changing, but he goes through external transformations as well. He changes in the way that he used to be a lieutenant in the army which made him strong and independent, but he is now a weaker salesman that is constantly surrounded by his family. I think that the family knows the beetle is indeed Gregor because if they knew it wasn’t, I feel that they would’ve attacked it fearing for their safety. The sister is very willing to help feed Gregor, but the parents are still apprehensive towards confronting him in person. I think the debt has something to do with his metamorphosis, but I don’t have a great hunch to what they may be exactly.

  2. At this point in the novel it becomes fairly obvious they relize he's a beetle, but i do agree with the validity of the confusion. The family's debt comes from the failed business his father started and they probably took a loan from the boss Gregor now works for and have to pay it back.
